William George O'Neill
Bill O’Neill, age 94, of S St. Paul was born on July 28, 1925 in St. Paul and passed away on September 17, 2019. For 70 years Bill was married to Alice, his loving wife, who preceded him in death. Half-siblings Pat, Ralph, James and Richard also preceded him in death. His surviving half-siblings are Vada, Deene and Dorothy Lynn. Bill is survived by his children Ginny (Steve) Wildman, Tom (Claudia), Dave (Diane), and Steve (Carol); his grandchildren Tina (John) Baum, Bill (Nikki) Wildman, Jenna (Wade) Flynn, Chris
(Julia), Maren, Tim, Derek (Katie), Aaron (Jamie), Cullen (Breanna), Erin (partner, Brian) and Ian
(Martha); his great-grandchildren Jesse, Emily, Ashley, Jake, Caden, Elle, Alice, Carolyn, Nicholas, Wyatt, Max, Braeden and Claire; and great-great-granddaughter Abigail. Bill is also survived by his step-grandchildren Matt (Jessica) and Amber (Josh); and his step-great-grandchildren Jackson, Ryker, Mara and Makena.
Bill grew up living with his grandparents in SSP and graduated from SSP High School in 1943. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy from July 1943 to April 1946. He served as a Radioman Second-Class on board the attack transports USS Talladega and USS Monrovia. He witnessed the formal Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. Bill married Alice, his HS sweetheart, while on leave from the Navy during WWII. Having lived virtually their entire lives in SSP, Bill and Alice had many lifelong friends dating back to their school days. Bill worked until his retirement at age 60 for The Milwaukee Road primarily as a communications operator. He was actively involved at Bethesda Lutheran Church as a choir member, soloist, council member and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed golf, reading, sports and travel.
Bill was a gracious, gentle and humble man of abiding faith who cared for his family all his days, and has generously left that enduring legacy to those he loved. He will be truly missed.
Special thanks from Bill’s grateful family to Walker Methodist at Westwood Ridge, Southview Acres Health Care Center and Allina Hospice Care.
Memorial service will be at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 2855 47th St. E, IGH, MN 55076 at 11 am on Thursday, October 3. Gathering of family and friends one hour prior with a light lunch to follow. Interment will be at Fort Snelling Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Bethesda Lutheran Church.
